James Bond 007 Watches

Ian Fleming, the creator of the Bond series, gave the character of 007 exquisite taste and style by basing it on his preference for classy Swiss watches and tailored clothing. James Bond movies have made use of some serious horology, as seen in Sean Connery’s Rolex Submariner and Daniel Craig’s Omega Planet Ocean or Seamaster, also known as “Casino Royale” watches. The WWII naval intelligence officer and author Ian Fleming wore his Rolex model 1016 Explorer while penning On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1962.

  • Goldfinger (1964)

Actor Who Played James Bond:

  • Sean Connery

The actor Sean Connery, who played the first James Bond, was a die-hard Rolex fan. According to rumors, Sean Connery’s Rolex Submariner from the first Bond movie came directly from his collection. Its stylish introduction to what would eventually become an iconic relationship was attached to a leather strap.

In 1955, the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538 was released. A new Caliber 1030 movement, a thinner case, more beveled lugs, and a larger 8mm winding crown were all introduced with the Submariner 6538. The 6538 is known as a “Big Crown” Submariner because of the large crown. Vintage watch collectors prize all Submariner 6538 timepieces, but this model is especially hard to find due to the four lines of text on its remarkably “Tropical” dial.

Since the 6538 was the first Submariner to have the chronometer certification on the dial, 4-line variations—especially those with distinctive color printing like this example—are highly prized by collectors. This ref. 6538 watch still has its original “Red Triangle” bezel insert, but the dial has faded to a bright, warm brown color.
