Learn About Victorinox Cutlery

Victorinox is known as a manufacturer of the original Swiss army knife, but do you know that cutlery was their initial product? Since the company was founded in 1884, Victorinox makes knives, and they happen to be contacted by the Swiss army to make pocket knives. Now, Victorinox manufactures household and professional knives, pocket tools, watches, and outdoor gear. According to Carl Elsener, the CEO of Victorinox, they develop their cutlery and other products as “true companions for life.”

R.H. Forschner Knives by Victorinox

The name R.H. Forschner is closely related to Victorinox knives, and it is because it used to be a division of Victorinox brand and distributed cutlery with more than 300 blade styles. The Forschner Group was a well-known cutlery company founded in the late 1800s originally as The Forschner Butcher Scale Company. The company began importing Victorinox knives in 1937 and used the term “Swiss Army Knives” as a marketing technique. The knives they were selling became so successful that shortly after the end of World War II, Forschner stopped selling their butcher scales and focused only on knives.

When Forschner went public in 1981, Victorinox became a minority owner. Victorinox acquired a larger stake in 1995, and finally purchased the remainder in 2002. Victorinox changed the name of Forschner to Swiss Army Brands Inc., but the Forschner name was still recognizable. When Victorinox released their first kitchen knife set during the 1990s, they resurrected the Forschner name.

The Forschner Fibrox line is one of Victorinox’s most successful cutlery lines. The product series’ affordable price coupled with thin, razor-sharp, lightweight blades made them a favorite choice of many budget-conscious amateur chefs. The blades bear the distinctive R.H. Forschner stamp. In 2009, Victorinox Swiss Army Inc. decided to change the “R.H. Forschner” brand on the blades to “Victorinox.”
