How to Choose Sun Hats For Kids

You’re probably aware that using sunscreen is the best way to protect your body against the harmful sun rays, particularly during the summer when you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors. Similarly, kids are also advised to use them since they’re always outside playing, especially on hot days. On the other hand, a sun hat also provides an extra layer of security for you and your child.

Sun hats are ideal for children as they are light and breathable. They will keep your child calm and relaxed. They also provide flexible straps for a secure fit and UV-blocking fabric to protect your child from the harmful rays of the sun.

But with sun hats, you should also remember that you also need to invest in a pair of sunglasses, swimwear and don the best sunscreen for your kids to provide extra protection. It is crucial, especially when your kid is constantly removing their sun hats.

The wide-brim hats help protect your child’s sunburn-prone areas like the head, face, and back of the neck. Finding something that your kid can wear and won’t fall off every five minutes when running around is the key to keeping them safe from the harmful UV rays.

These hats come in various colors and designs that may make your child think that their new hat looks cool enough to keep it on.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Sun Hat

1. The UPF Rating

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor or UPF is similar to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) commonly found in sunblocks. The only difference is that UPF is applied to the cloth rather than a lotion. A UPF rating tells you how well a piece of clothing or hat can block UV radiations.

If a piece of clothing or hat has 25 UPF, it means that only 1/25th of the sun’s radiation will pass through the fabric and onto the wearer’s skin. The highest UPF factor is 50; therefore, make sure to check the UPF rating on the hat so that your child doesn’t get exposed to UV radiation.

2. The Back Flap

Sunhats with back flaps are good as they also protect the back of the neck of your kid from the sun. If your kid has long hair, it won’t be that big of a problem because their hair will protect their neck; but you should probably buy a hat with a back flap if you have a son or daughter with short hair.

The neck flaps extend down over the ears and onto the side of the neck. They protect the head and ears against the sun rays as they are usually one of the most exposed and sun-damaged areas of the body.

3. A Wide Brim

You should also look for a broad and long brim to shade your child’s ears. It will provide them with extra protection for their head, covering their face and ears along with it. Bucket-style hats with the same lengthy brim all the way around will also provide much-needed extra protection. A trucker-style hat with a large front brim is also an option you can consider.

4. A Chin Strap

Hats with chin straps are helpful for both kids and adults. They’re also an excellent idea for those who want to wear hats in windy areas, such as mountains and beaches, etc. You can also use a drawstring cord instead of a chin strap for toddlers who can’t stand getting a tight chin strap on them. During windy weather, it will keep your kid’s hat from flying away.

Use a breakaway chin strap to avoid choking or suffocation if you’re using a drawstring type of strap that sticks tightly to the chin.

5. Moisture Resistant

When your kids are outside in the summer, they can become a hot and sweaty mess quickly. As they’re kids, they will play around outside and get themselves dirty.

Since they would be sweating profusely, it would be ideal if the hat has a headband or sweatband to relieve all of the moisture from their brows. In other words, it should be moisture resistant even on scorching and sweaty days.

Sun Hats – Essential for UV Protection

As we discussed above, sunblock lotions aren’t the only thing you’ll need to protect yourself and your kids from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. You’ll also need hats to block those harmful rays and protect the head and the face from being exposed to the sun that ultimately causes sunburns.

Be sure to check their UPF ratings, the materials they are made of, and durability before buying the sun hats for your kids.
